Driving a car permanently registered abroad

 

On 01.01.2017 amendments  to the Road Traffic Law  and Vehicle Operating Tax And Company Car Tax Law will come into force and we inform you about the following.

With these amendments coming into force:

  1. permits issued by RTSD allowing use of foreign registered car will lapse;
  2. tax for M1* and N1** category vehicle registered abroad, if  operated by  person  whose declared place of residence is in Latvia is introduced.

Thus, from January 1st 2017, a person whose place of residence is declared Latvia will be allowed to drive in Latvia  foreign registered M1* or N1** category vehicle, if vehicle tax is paid.

The following rates of the tax are fixed:

  1. 10 euro per day;
  2. 250 euro per month;
  3. 600 euro per six months;
  4. 1000 euro per year.

Payment of the tax can be done:

  • with payment card through the electronic payment system e-RTSD (service also will be available for those who are not registered as e-RTSD users): https://e.csdd.lv/arvtlizmnod/;
  • in person in regional RTSD offices in cash or by payment card.

Please, be aware that from 01.01.2017. previously issued permits to participate in road traffic with  passenger cars permanently registered abroad will lapse!

M1* – vehicles designed for the carriage of passengers, with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver seat, also known as passenger cars.

N1** -  vehicles designed for the carriage of goods, having a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes, also known as Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV). Also includes Pick-Up trucks.
