Penalty points are valid for 2 years starting the day of application. Violation for which 8 penalty points are applied are
valid for 5 years.
When 4 penalty points are collected a written warning is sent to the declared place of residence of the driver.
When 8 penalty points are collected a written invitation is sent to the driver to attend a course on traffic safety issues. No sanctions are imposed for not attending the course, but 2 penalty points are deducted when a driver attends the course.
When 12 penalty points are collected, a driver has to take special exam related to traffic safety issues. Passing this exam results in deduction of 2 penalty points. This exam can be taken repeatedly, but in case of not passing it or not taking it 2 additional penalty points are applied.
When 16 penalty points are collected (for novice drivers having up to 2 years of driving experience – 10 points) the driver’s licence is suspended for 1 year. In order to renew driver’s licence a driver has to pass both theoretical and practical exam at CSDD. Novice drivers have the “novice” status extended for 1 more year.
A person can attend the course voluntarily at any time and thus deduct 2 penalty points while the maximum of penalty points has not been collected. A driver can apply for the course by calling 7025707.
When maximum of penalty points has been collected driver’s licence becomes invalid and has to be returned to CSDD in 20 days. If this requirement is not met, invalidity period of driver’s licence is extended for respective number of days of delay.
When such a driver is caught using invalid driver’s licence, invalidity period is extended for the period of time since invalidity entered into force till the day of the use of this invalid driver’s licence. Additional 3 penalty points and administrative fine applies.
